Prepositional Phrase

Frasa atau frase adalah sebuah istilah linguistik. Lebih tepatnya, frase merupakan satuan linguistik yang lebih besar dari kata dan lebih kecil dari klausa dan kalimat. Frase adalah kumpulan kata nonpredikatif. Artinya frase tidak memiliki predikat dalam strukturnya. Itu yang membedakan frase dari klausa dan kalimat.

Frase Kata Depan berarti kumpulan kata yang dibentuk melalui kata depan (Prepositions). Beberapa diantaranya adalah sebagai berikut:

In case of – In the case of

1. In case of = Ketika ada
2. In the case of = Tentang, bicara soal

• In case of emergency, please dial 911!
  (Ketika ada keadaan gawat darurat, segera telpon 911!)


• The teacher said the essays were mostly very good, but in the case of Jane’s and Tom’s, there was still much room for improvement.
  (Guru itu berkata bahwa mayoritas esainya bagus, namun khusus esainya Jane dan Tom, perlu diperbaiki lagi)

In (the) face of- On the face of

1. In (the) face of = Dengan adanya
2. On the face of = Menilai dari penampilannya yang nampak

• He can’t possibly win in the face of such difficulties.
  (Dia tidak mungkin menang dengan tingkat kesulitan yang seperti itu)


• On the face of the results, the examination must have been too difficult.
  (Melihat dari hasilnya, ujian itu seharusnya dibuat lebih susah lagi)

In favor of – In favor with

1. In favor of = Mendukung
2. In favor with = Disukai oleh

• Over half the members voted in favor of the suggestion.
  (Lebih dari separo anggo memutuskan untuk mendukung saran itu)


• You can’t expect to be in favor with Susan if you are always criticizing her.
  (Kamu jangan berharap bisa disukai oleh Susan jika kamu selalu mengkritiknya)

For fear of – In fear of

1. For fear of = Karena takut dengan
2. In fear of =Khawatir akan keselamatan seseorang

• I never carry a large sum of money with me for fear of losing it.
  (Saya tidak pernah membawa uang banyak karena takut hilang)


• He ran in fear of his life when he heard the shots.
  (Dia lari karena khawatir dengan nyawanya ketika dia mendengar suara tembakan)

By the name of – In the name of

1. By the name of = Yang bernama
2. In the name of = Atas nama

• A man by the name of Johnson called this morning.
  (Seorang yang bernama Johnson dipanggil tadi pagi)


• Stop in the name of law!
  (Berhenti atas nama hukum)

At the point of – On the point of

1. At the point of = Mendekati (satu keadaan)
2. On the point of = Hampir (melakukan sesuatu)

• The old man is at the point of death.
  (Pria tua itu sudah menjekat ajalnya)


• I was on the point of going to bed when the telephone rang.
  (Saya sudah mau tidur ketika telepon berdering)

In possession of – In the possession of

1. In possession of = Memiliki, mempunyai sesuatu
2. In the possession of = Kepunyaan seseorang.

• I am not in possession of all the details, so I can’t give my valid opinion of the matter.
  (Saya tidak punya detailnya, sehingga saya tidak bisa menyampaikan pendapat saya yang valid atas masalah ini)


• The documents have been in the possession of the British Museum for fifty years.
  (Dokumen itu sudah menjadi milik Museum Inggris selama 50 tahun)

In/With regard to – Out of regard for

1. In/With regard to = Menurut, tentang
2. Out of regard for = Berdasarkan, setelah mempertimbangkan

• With regard to the safety of the operation, I have the following measures to propose recommendation.
  (Menurut standart keselamatan operasi, saya memiliki ukuran-ukuran di bawah ini untuk mengajukan rekomendasi)


• Out of regard for your work, I am recommending you for promotion.
  (Setelah mempertimbangkan pekerjaan Anda, saya merekomendasi kan Anda untuk naik jabatan)

In respect of – With respect to

1. In respect of = Menurut, tentang
2. With respect to = Berdasarkan (referensi)

• In respect of the information gathered, the new airport will be soon built.
  (Menurut informasi yang berhasil dikumpulkan, bandara baru akan segera dibangun)


• With respect to your request for a salary rise, a final decision will be taken by the management next week.
  (Berdasarkan permintaan Anda tentang kenaikan gaji, keputusan akhir akan diambil oleh manajemen minggu depan)

At the sight of – In the sight of

1. At the sight of = Ketika melihat
2. In the sight of = Berdasarkan sudut pandang

• She burst out laughing at the sight of his new haircut.
  (Dia tertawa terbahak-bahak ketika melihat gaya rambutnya yang baru)


• From a moral point of view, his conduct is understandable and even excusable, but in the sight of the law he is guilty..
  (Dari sudut pandang moral, tindakannya dapat dimaklumi dan bahkan bisa dima’afkan, namun dari sudut pandang hukum, dia bersalah)

At the time of – in time of

1. At the time of = Pada waktu tertentu, pada saat.
2. In time of = Selama

• I was in India at the time of my mother’s death.
  (Saya ada di India pada saat Ibu saya meninggal)


• In time of need one is thankful for a small comforts.
  (Selama seseorang masih butuh, pasti orang itu akan berterima kasih walaupun dengan sesuatu yang kecil)

In view of – with a view to

1. In view of = Menurut, tentang, berdasarkan
2. With a view to = Dengan penekanan atau tujuan tertentu

• In view of his recent successes, Jones has been asked to stand for the next election.
  (Berdasarkan kesuksesannya saat ini, Jones sudah diminta untuk ikut dalam pemilu yang akan datang)


• He has bought the old house with a view to renovating it and selling it at a profit.
  (Dia sudah membeli rumah tua itu dengan tujuan untuk merenovasinya dan menjualnya lagi agar bisa dapat untung)

For/From want of – in want of

1. For/From want of = Karena kekurangan
2. In want of = Membutuhkan

• Many crops and trees have already died from want of rain.
  (Banyak tanaman mati karena kekurangan hujan)


• I am badly in want of a pair of new shoes, but I have no time at the moment to go out and buy them!
  (Saya sangat membutuhkan sepatu baru namun saya tidak punya waktu saat ini untuk membelinya)
